Birth Cohort Geographic Mobility in the United States: 2005–2023

This U.S. Census Bureau report explores how Americans’ geographic mobility has changed across generations from 2005 to 2023. Millennials showed the highest mobility rates for most of the period, particularly during their young adult years, while Baby Boomers and the Silent Generation were more rooted. Interestingly, Generation Z was the only group to see an increase in mobility following the COVID-19 pandemic. The study reveals how age, life stage, and generational experiences influence why and how people move.
