Household Income in States and Metropolitan Areas: 2024

The Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey shows that median household income in the U.S. rose 2% from 2023, reaching $81,604. Income growth varied across states and metropolitan areas, with Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia among the highest earners, while Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Virginia ranked lowest. Asian households reported the highest median incomes, while Black households had the lowest. Nationally, income inequality slightly decreased, with notable declines in nine states and Puerto Rico.
