Electronic Records: VA Needs to Address Data Management Challenges for New System

The Department of Veterans Affairs has made progress toward implementing its planned data management operations. Prior to the initial system deployment in October 2020, the department moved selected data to the new EHR system in accordance with its plans.

Although these efforts included testing designed to ensure transferred data were valid and matched expected findings, VA’s analysis and GAO’s study revealed that physicians encountered difficulties with the accessibility, accuracy, and appropriateness of migrated data.
