Turkey (Türkiye): Major Issues and U.S. Relations (update)

This report provides background information and analysis on key issues affecting U.S.-Turkey (Türkiye)  relations, including domestic Turkish developments and various foreign policy and defense matters.

Turkey has been a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) since 1952. U.S. and Turkish officials maintain that cooperation on regional security matters remains mutually important, despite Turkey’s 2019 acquisition of an S-400 surface-to-air defense system from Russia and a number of other U.S.-Turkey differences (such as in Syria and with Greece and Cyprus).
