The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has forecast U.S. coal production to decline through 2050, with the sharpest reduction to occur by the mid-2020s.
Consequently, the coal industry’s decline has contributed to economic distress in coal-dependent communities, including increased unemployment and poverty rates.
