School Districts in Vulnerable Communities Faced Heightened Challenges After Recent Natural Disasters

Since 2017, all 50 states and U.S. territory have had over 300 presidentially declared catastrophic disasters. Many of these disasters have devastated K-12 schools, especially those in socially vulnerable communities. This report examines

(1) how school districts that received key federal disaster recovery grants served students from vulnerable groups,

(2) the recovery experiences of selected K-12 school districts in vulnerable communities, and

(3) how Education’s Restart program supports school disaster recovery.
