The Telecommunications Act of 1996 charges the Commission with “encouraging the deployment on a reasonable and timely basis of advanced telecommunications capability to all Americans” by removing barriers to infrastructure investment and by promoting competition in the telecommunications market. Over the last four years, the Commission’s top priority has been closing the digital divide, in recognition that high-speed broadband and the digital opportunity it brings are increasingly essential to innovation, economic opportunity, healthcare, and civic engagement in today’s modern society. With many jobs, schools, and healthcare services shifting to virtual environments in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the need to deliver broadband connectivity across America has never been greater.
