Unlocking the Potential of Research Infrastructure Ecosystems to Tackle Science Investment

Research infrastructures (RIs) represent major scientific investments, yet many of them still serve only narrow expert communities despite having far broader potential. This report highlights how collaborative RI ecosystems—built across disciplines, borders, and scientific domains—can accelerate discovery and strengthen responses to complex societal challenges. From pandemic resilience to environmental monitoring, these ecosystems show how shared goals, strategic planning, and supportive policies can unlock new levels of impact. Policymakers and funders play a pivotal role by enabling sustainable partnerships and creating incentives that encourage RIs to collaborate more widely.
