E.O. 14422 directs the Federal government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” citing the Great Lakes’ importance to American history, commerce, defense, energy, shipping, and economic development. The order highlights U.S. investments in protecting the Great Lakes ecosystem and the role of the region in supporting trade, manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and hundreds of thousands of American jobs.
Within 30 days, the Secretary of the Interior, working with the U.S. Board on Geographic Names, must take appropriate action to implement the new name. The Geographic Names Information System must be updated, and Federal agencies must use “Lake America” in applicable maps, contracts, documents, and communications.
