Price indexes play a crucial role in distinguishing between inflation and real growth in national accounts. However, issues arise when quality changes complicate this measurement, especially with chained indexes over extended periods. This study examines chained price indexes in high-tech sectors, revealing a problem called “comingling,” where chained indexes fail to accurately handle quality change.
