Criminal Victimization in the 22 Largest U.S. States, 2020–2022

The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ new report shows violent crime rates fell nationwide and in several large states between 2017–19 and 2020–22. Property crime also declined in most areas, though New York saw an uptick. Burglary rates dropped in 14 states, and reporting patterns varied—Ohio led in reporting violent incidents, while Indiana and Wisconsin were among the lowest. These findings offer a deeper look at how crime trends and reporting behaviors differ across the nation’s most populous states.
