Aging offshore oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico pose growing risks to safety, the environment, and taxpayers. This GAO report calls for stronger federal oversight and coordination as many of these facilities near or exceed their operational lifespan. It highlights challenges in decommissioning, inadequate financial assurances from operators, and gaps in data sharing between agencies. Without swift action, the burden of cleanup and dismantling could fall squarely on the public.
