Can Technology Deliver a Lean, Mean Veteran-Serving Machine?

This research report examines how the Department of Veterans Affairs can improve operational efficiency through targeted healthcare technology modernization rather than large-scale system replacement. The study evaluates PeriOptimization, a web-based procedural management platform integrated with VistA, CPRS, VSE, and ISS. Results from a VA Level 1c facility demonstrated significant reductions in scheduling workload across surgical, dental, and endoscopy services, achieving an overall efficiency gain of more than 88%. The report highlights improvements in staff productivity, care coordination, reporting, and data accuracy while projecting potential nationwide cost avoidance exceeding $27 million annually. It offers a practical roadmap for modernizing VA healthcare operations while preserving existing infrastructure investments.
