Why AI-Generated Content Labeling Mandates Fall Short

Mandatory labeling of AI-generated content, such as through watermarking, may seem like a straightforward solution to counter disinformation and deepfakes, but it falls short of addressing deeper issues. Technical limitations, including the ease of removing watermarks, reduce its effectiveness. Moreover, distinguishing between AI- and human-generated content does little to tackle the root causes of misinformation or IP violations. A broader approach that includes digital literacy, transparency standards, and targeted policy responses is key to building trust in the digital ecosystem.
