Understanding the Benefits

Social Security reaches almost every family and, at some point, touches the lives of nearly all Americans. The Social Security Administration (SSA) help older Americans, workers who develop disabilities and families in which a spouse or parent dies. The SSA estimates that about 180 million people will work in Social Security-covered employment in 2023 and pay Social Security taxes. As of September 2023, about 67 million people received monthly Social Security benefits.
