Overview of Federal Criminal Laws Prohibiting Threats and Harassment of Election Workers

The targeting of election workers, as well as recent correlated poll worker shortages in several states, may help spark Congress’s interest in the current federal statutory protections for election workers. Several bills introduced in the 117th Congress would create new federal offenses for crimes against election workers, expand existing offenses to include more types of election workers and election activities, and increase penalties.
