DHS Needs a Unified Strategy to Counter Disinformation Campaigns

This paper summarizes the Inspector General’s report to the DHS on its efforts to counter disinformation appearing in social media. The Department of Homeland Security began internal and external coordination efforts in 2018 to counter disinformation appearing on social media.

DHS does not yet have a unified department-wide strategy to effectively counter disinformation that originates from both foreign and domestic sources. Without a unified strategy, DHS and its components cannot coordinate effectively, either internally or externally.
