China Naval Modernization: Implications for U.S. Navy Capabilities

China’s navy is, by far, the largest of any country in East Asia. It surpassed the US Navy in terms of battle force ships between 2015 and 2020. China’s naval modernization effort encompasses an array of ship, aircraft, weapon, and C4ISR acquisition programs. China’s military modernization effort is aimed at developing capabilities for addressing the situation in Taiwan.

This paper focuses on the current state of China’s navy and the actions the US Navy has taken to counter China’s naval modernization effort.
