Wilderness: Issues and Legislation

The Wilderness Act of 1964 established the National Wilderness Preservation System and, in it, Congress reserved for itself the authority to  designate federal lands as part of the system. The act initially designated 54 wilderness areas containing 9.1 million acres of national forest lands.
