Following each national election, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts the Current Population Survey’s (CPS) November Voting and Registration Supplement. The supplement is fielded following both presidential elections when congressional seats and the presidency are decided, and midterm elections when congressional seats are the highest offices decided.
The CPS has surveyed Americans eligible to vote in these elections since 1964, and estimates derived from this survey are among the most consistently reliable and publicly available estimates of the characteristics of American voters.
