Climate Change and International Responses Increasing Challenges to US National Security Through 2040

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a National Intelligence Estimate on climate change in late October 2021. Since climate change is increasing extreme weather event trends, a growing field is trying to answer the question of what fraction of an individual event can be attributed to climate change. Improvements in big data collection and processing, along with more advanced computers, most likely will advance our knowledge of attribution.

In addition, scientists are working to improve models to better answer the question of when a given component of either the regional or global climate system will approach or pass a tipping point, an area of high importance given the risks associated with it—the state of science currently is still unable to adequately answer this question.
