Assessment of Biocide Impacts on Life Support and Extravehicular Activity Architectures

On the International Space Station (ISS), product water from the Water Processing Assembly (WPA) is dosed with iodine to prevent unwanted microbial growth in the potable water system. This water is used in vehicle life support (LS) systems, in the extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), for crew consumption, and for crew hygiene activities. Long experience with iodine on ISS has shown that there are key technical challenges to using iodine as a biocide for Exploration.
